Vegan Tempeh BLT

Updated: Jul 18, 2021

What goes good with a Tempeh Bacon BLT?

When I think BLT I automatically associate it with tomato soup. Tempeh BLTs go so well with a nice tomato soup. I have a great creamy vegan tomato soup recipe that I usually eat these BLTs with. Check out the link here.

What goes in the Vegan Tempeh BLT?

  • Lettuce - Iceberg lettuce is most common for BLTs but any lettuce that gives a nice crunch will work.

  • Tempeh Bacon - Tempeh Bacon can be found in most grocery stores in the produce section. See this link for my favorite.

  • Tomato - The best tomatoes for BLTs are heirloom tomatoes but you can also use beefsteak as a substitute.

  • Onion and Avacado - Is optional but give a little more flavor to the tempeh bacon BLT

  • Bread - Probably the most important ingredient is a loaf of good bread. The best type of bread for a BLT is sourdough bread. If you cannot find that then find a nice bread in the bakery aisle of the grocery store.

How long does the recipe last?

Since all the ingredients are made fresh it's best to eat the BLT within minutes of making it. Otherwise, the ingredients will start to go bad so make sure to finish it right away.

The Recipe

See the ingredient list above for replacements and descriptions.

  • 1 Head of Lettuce

  • 1 Package of Tempeh Bacon

  • 1 Heirloom tomato

  • 1 medium red onion

  • 1 Hass avocado

  • Sourdough bread (see replacements above)

  • vegan butter

  1. Slice the tomatoes into thin slices so that will fit on a sandwich

  2. Halve the avocado, scoop the contents out, and slice into 1/4 inch slices

  3. Remove the first few layers of the iceberg lettuce and discard. Once removed strip sandwich-sized lettuce leaves from the head of lettuce.

For the Bacon

  1. Add olive oil to the bottom of a cast-iron pan.

  2. Heat up a cast-iron pan to medium-high temperature.

  3. Once heated add tempeh bacon to the pan and fry until crisp. Make sure to reduce heat if it starts to burn.

  4. Once fully cooked remove bacon and place on a plate lined with paper towels to soak up any excess grease.

The bread!

  1. Preheat the oven to 350.

  2. Lightly spread butter to one side of the bread.

  3. Place the bread butter side up on the pan until toasted to your liking.
